Sophia is actually a late stand-in for French actress Emmanuelle Béart, who refused to come in protest against Turkish policemen brutalizing participants at a rally on May 8 International Women's Day. Maggio Musicale Fiorentino - April 30 Sophia attends the inauguration of the 68th Maggio Musicale opera festival at the Teatro comunale in Florence. Zubin Mehta conducts La Tosca in an evening tribute to lyric soprano Renata Tabaldi, who, incidently, had dubbed Sophia's voice in 1953's Aida. presented with a blue band representing honorary citizenship from the
local Mayor and
regional governor at the Palazzo Migliaresi. She breaks into tears
during the ceremony saying in Neapolitan « e c'aggia fa? » (what can I do). She also receives two days
later the Civitas Award during the Watershow event where she is joined
by her son Edoardo who flew in with no prior notice from Los

Maggio Musicale - October 1 Sophia attends Carlo, Jr.'s debut concert in Italy at the opening of the new season of the Maggio Musicale Orchestra at the Teatro Comunale in Florence. An exhibit called Da Sofia a Sophia, which is presented by collector Vincenzo Gaudino, opens at the Palazzo Migliaresi in Pozzuoli, just a few days prior to Sophia's visit to her home town. Sophia visits the exhibit during her stay. Birthday Gift from Fiat - September 20 Lapo Elkann, Fiat's head of brand promotion gives Sophia for her 71st birthday a brand new Grande Punto accompanied with a bunch of red roses. Sophia Wax Statue - Sophia's statue, depicting a scene from La Ciociara and introduced to the Buena Park's Movieland Wax Museum in 1963, is transfered to San Francisco Wax Museum where it can be seen in the "Sermon of the Mount" section. |
