Miami Film Festival - February 16
Miami Film Festival presents Wertmüller's film Sabato, Domenica
e Lunedì at the Gusman Center and pays tribute to Sophia
on closing night with Festival president Thomas Spencer handing her a crystal obelisk. Sophia was given the symbolic city key earlier during the day.

Visit to Argentina - May 13-16
Sophia is made illustrous guest of Buenos Aires by mayor Carlos Grosso and is granted an honorary degree by the local university's Faculty of Architecture. Reception at the Italian Embassy hosted by ambassador Claudio Moreno on the 15th and visit of President Carlos Menem at the Olivos state residence. Sophia is accompanied by her son Edoardo and settles at the beautiful Alvear Palace Hotel during her 4-day stay.

Benefit Gala in Montecarlo - July 25
Sophia is on hand at a benefit gala at Montecarlo's Loews Hotel in an effort to bring food to indigenous populations of South America.

Valentino: Thirty Years of Magic - September 22
Sophia attends the Valentino: Thirty Years of Magic retrospective gala held at an Italian piazza created in the 67th Street Armory in New York City. Despite her 58 years of age, she steals the show over the top models.

Columbus Parade - October 12
Dressed in a Nolan Miller red dress Sophia is Grand Marshal as she clings to mayor David Dinkins' arm at the Columbus Parade in New York City.

National Italian American Foundation - October 3
Sophia attends in Washington the Italian American gala for the first time and receives a Hall of Fame award for her work in the entertainment industry. She is the center of attention the whole evening with people constantly asking for photographs at her table. At one point emcee Jack Valenti takes the microphone and begs for civility.

NICE Festival - November 5
Sophia is on hand on opening night of the Second New Italian Cinema Events in New York City along with Martin Scorsese and Alberto Sordi.

UNHCR Press Conference - November 18

Sophia is appointed as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva. "When I come back maybe I'm going to be a different person", says Sophia, "because whatever I see over there it's going to be something so incredible that it may change my whole life."

Mission to Africa - November 25
Sophia starts doing missionary work for the United Nations and on November 25 flies to Kenya to dramatize the plight of refugees from famine-stricken Somalia and the need for world assistance.
