Sophia is godmother for Jean Barthet exhibit called "Jeux de transparences, rêves autour d'un parfum" at Hotel Georve-V in Paris where Bibi perfume is also launched. La Nuit des Césars - March 9 Sophia receives a special César Award for Lifetime Achievement and also acts as MC during the award ceremony held at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Qualified as "one of the genuine treasures of world cinema who, in a career rich with memorable performances, has added permanent luster to our art form", Sophia receives an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, dressed in Valentino black dress, from Gregory Peck, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. "Getting a second Oscar for your career and all that goes through in your mind - why did you get it, why did they give it to you, the ambition and the dedication and the sacrifices - I think it has to be the most wonderful moment of my life. I will never forget it. Never, never, never." She gets the only standing ovation of the evening. La Nuit des Molières - April 8 Sophia attends the Molière award ceremonies in Paris. 17th Moscow Film Festival - July 1 Sophia makes a quick appearance at the Russian film festival. Toronto Film Festival - September 8 Sophia is in Toronto for the presentation of Sabato, domenica e lunedì with press conference at Bistro 990. De Sica Festival - October 2 Sophia attends the screening of La Ciociara at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City during a one-month tribute festival to Italian legend Vittorio De Sica, who directed her in the movie that won her an Oscar for best actress in 1962. "I owe to him more than I can do in this trip to New York for what he has done for my career, for what he has meant to me, for what he has taught me, so that's why I came." ![]() Carlo, Jr.'s Graduation - May Sophia, Edoardo and Odile Rodriguez de la Fuente all attend Carlo's graduation ceremony at Pepperdine's Seaver College. Ciao Mamma - May 11 While staying at her Geneva home, Sophia decides to visit her ill mother, Romilda Villani, in Rome. Two days later, on May 9, she dies in Sophia's arms at her via Salaria house. "If I had not had that sudden impulse to visit her, she would have died all by herself. I am so happy I was there." Sophia, Carlo and Maria attend the funeral. Sophia Mugged - August As she is walking a Rome side street with her sister Maria, Sophia is accosted by a mugger who steals her sister's purse and starts to run. Sophia throws out a leg, tripping the culprit, and she and Maria sit on him until help arrives. Venice Film Festival - September The famous Italian festival had planned to have Sophia as godmother for the closing ceremonies but Sophia's request to have her fly from New York to Venice on a private plane makes the festival committee turn to Monica Vitti. Sophia Missing - September Sophia is reported missing after being last spotted in Fort Pierce's Taylor Creek, Florida. She is fine and just happened the false alert is due to a floating transmitter that abruptly stopped after being hit. Christmas in Geneva - December Sophia spends the Christmas holidays in Geneva with Carlo, Edoardo who flew from Los Angeles, and other family members. |
