Extraordinary Evening with Sophia Loren - March 30
Wearing a low-cut white cocktail dress and a ring with red. white and green stones, the colors of the Italian flag, Sophia is guest of honor at a musical fund-raiser event, at Governor's Club in West Palm Beach, which is organized by Community Alliance against AIDS. "AIDS has traumatized and shocked everybody", says Sophia, "with your name, if you can raise some money, if you can be of help in finding a cure for this terrible plague of our century, then you have to do it."

Cannes Film Festival - May 11
Sophia accompanied by her son Edoardo attends the famous French festival where Sophia's handprint is added in front of the Palais des Festivals. She is among the guests at a dinner offered by Minister of Culture Jack Lang on opening night. Sophia previously attended the Festival in 1954, 1955, 1958, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1964, 1966 (president), 1976, 1977 and 1983. Festival dates: May 11 through May 23.

Premio Fiuggi - July 8
Sophia is in Rome for the Premi Fiuggi ceremonies where she receives, along with director Alberto Lattuada and writer Suso Cecchi d'Amico an award for her contribution to cinema. The event is broadcast live on Rai Uno.

Gorbachev's Visit to Rome - November 29-30
Sophia is invited to two state receptions during the official visit of Mikhail Gorbachev in Rome. Reception at the Quirinale Palace on the 29th, with Sophia arriving late, and a farewell dinner at Villa Madama on the 30th.

World Cup Draw - December 9
Sophia is godmother and one of the star guests, along with Pavarotti and Brazilian legend Pelé, during the 1990 FIFA World Cup draw at the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome where a record number of 1,480 journalists is reached. Joao Avelange, Luciano Pavarotti, Gianna Nannini and Edoardo Benatto do a live performance of the Worl Cup hymn. The conspiracy theory that accuses Sophia of wearing a magnetic ring when making the draw is still alive today.

A theater play dedicated to Sophia, entitled Sufi - a tribute to Loren conceived by Patrick Rossi Gastaldi - makes its debut at a theater in Todi, Umbria.

Niece Alessandra Marries - October 28
Alessandra Mussolini marries customs police Mauro Floriani on the 67th anniversary of Fascist March of Rome that resulted in dictator Mussolini gaining power. The event takes place in Predappio, hometown of Mussolini where Sophia's sister, Maria, married too in 1962. Sophia does not attend and Alessandra tells reporters it is just a coincidence that the wedding is on the anniversary of The March of Rome.
