Coty stops marketing the Sophia brand perfume following a sharp decline in sales since the introduction of Elizabeth Taylor's Passion perfume on the market in 1987, which was supported by a $10 million promotional campaign. It is said that Sophia's earnings from her tie-in with Coty were probably around $25 million since the perfume's introduction in 1980.

Wearing a bright red blazer and a hard-hat labeled "Sophia", Sophia visits Ellis Island, accompanied by Chrysler Corp. chairman Lee Iacocca and head of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, to help publicize the Foundation's effort to raise funds with the American Immigrant Wall of Honor.

Party in honor of Michael Jackson at US Ambassador's Villa Taverna in Rome where another historical picture is taken with Sophia, her long-time bosom rival Lollobrigida and Jackson in the middle. American Ambassador Maxwell Rabb, calling himself a "bad boy", says he has invited the two actresses because "you can't come to Italy without meeting both."

Dressed in a splendid turquoise dress by Valentino, Sophia attends the Telegatti Award Night at Milan's Teatro Ventaglio Nazionale and accepts from the Minister of Foreign Affairs a Telegatto award for The Fortunate Pilgrim, which wins the Best Foreign TV Screenplay award.

In her role of godmother, Sophia is in Viareggio to christen her designer Valentino' yacht called T.M. Blue One, a Picchiotti nautical jewel that is 46 meters long. After the ceremony Sophia and Valentino go aboard another boat, Massimo Gatti's Toi et Moi for an exclusive party with VIP guests.

Premio Napoli - December 3

Sophia is in Naples to receive the Premio Napoli even though she was born in Rome and grew up in the Naples suburb of Pozzuoli. "I have lived all over the world, but my native home is Naples", were Sophia's comments while president of Premio Napoli Foundation, Vittorio Pellegrino, said she was the "soul of Naples".

I think when you get to know Michael you understand the nature of his charisma. He's shy, he's delicate and he looks at the world with innocent eyes of a child." says Sophia.

Statuesque Loren - April

People of Naples vote overwhelmingly to erect a statue to its famous native daughter in order to attract tourists. Pozzuoli was a main Mediterranean port in Roman times and still boasts an amphitheater and ancient temples. Town residents believe a statue could attract as many tourists as the Roman ruins.
