American Cinema Awards - January 9
Sophia and Kirk Douglas are honored at the Fourth Annual American Cinema Awards at Beverly Hills' Wilshire Hotel. Sylvester Stallone presents the award to Sophia who, wearing an off-the-shoulder gown with a black lace bodice and full red taffeta skirt, tells the audience "this is like a fairy tale to me". Her favorite pop singer, Michael Jackson, is among the roster of star personalities and she's thrilled to have her picture taken with him.

Dior's 40th Anniversary Dinner Party - March 20
Sophia attends Christian Dior's lavish 40th anniversary dinner party at the designer's newly renovated boutique, on Avenue Montaigne in Paris, wearing an opulent Valentino gown.

Golden Mask Award - September 27
Sophia attends the annual Golden Mask Award presentation Campione d'Italia Casino, near Milan, where she receives an award for lifetime achievement.

America-Christopher Columbus Award - October 17
Sophia, Luciano Pavarotti, Jack Valenti, Guy Talese and Raffaella Carrà all receive the America-Christopher Columbus Award at the Italian Embassy to Washington for their contribution in strenghtening relationships between Italy and the United States. The ceremony is preceded by a welcome cocktail at Villa Firenze offered by Italian ambassador Rinaldo Petrignani.

Williams Island Premiere Party - December 19
Sophia is among the celebrities on hand at a black-tie cocktail party and a seven-course dinner served at the island club. More than 200 guests attend, mostly residents who pay $100 each. Among the other celebs at the party is Robin Leach who is in town filming a sequel to the 1986 episode on Sophia's antiques..

EDITOR'S NOTES

Ciao Blasetti - February 1
As Sophia is dubbing her voice into Italian for the movie Courage, which premieres on Italian TV on February 15, she is apprised of the death of director Alessandro Blasetti who directed her three times in the 1950's. She does not attend the funeral service because she does not want her memories into a flash of photographers.

Goodbye to Levine - July 31
Producer and movie mogul Joseph. E. Levine dies at Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut at age 81 after a short illness. He co-produced many films with Ponti and distributed most Sophia's films in the USA in the 60's.

Ponti's Trial - November 9
Italy's Supreme Court of Cassation finds Carlo Ponti innocent of exporting funds charges.
