![]() Caserta Prison - May 19
Sophia decides of her
own free will to fly from Paris to Rome where she is arrested upon her
arrival at Fiumicino airport for tax invasion and driven to
the women's prison in Caserta. She was originally
sentenced to four months in jail but an
appeal court gave her a one-month sentence and a 12-million-lira fine.
Sophia has always denied guilt stating that she only did what her
accountant told her to. Bouquets of roses and telegrams came in from
supporters and other celebrities. Journalists and photographers from
all over the world came to cover the story and get exclusive rights on
Sophia's diary or pictures in prison. Her most touching visit happens
when Aunt Dora and Uncles Mario and Guido came from Pozzuoli. The jail
is in a former convent is run by 6 nuns. Sophia's single cell has
pink walls, a bed, a small wardrobe, a table, a B/W television, a
private bathroom and an unbarred window looking out on the prison's
barren courtyard.

charge that pictures of her at the prison windows were faked.Caserta Prison - June 5 Sophia leaves the

order after serving 17 days of a 30-day jail sentence. She drives away
from the Caserta prison en route to her mother's house, in Rome, in a
silver Mercedes escorted
by four police
cars. About her jail term,
she says, "If you have
to pay such a price to see your family, and to see your niece, and to
see your own country, and to have your smile back in your face, I
think, I think you can do it even though you suffer very much."
