FILM PROJECTS

The Love Song of Mara Lumera
Announced in January the film is scheduled to be go before cameras in the fall with Dino Risi as director and Marcello Mastroianni as her co-star. The story is of a beautiful widow of a Mafia leader who assumes her late husband's role, but repents and becomes a nun. The film is canceled when Sophia becomes pregnant.

Goodbye to Emilio Schuberth - January 4
Emilio Schubert, Sophia's personal designer in the 1950's and couturier of royal families, dies of a heart attack in Rome at age 67.

Amalfi Villa in a Film

Exterior scenes for the movie Che? by Roman Polanski and starring Marcello Mastroianni are filmed at Ponti's villa in Ravello on the Amalfi coast. Sophia rarely went to the villa because it dated back to Ponti's first marriage and his ex-wife still shared use of it.

Vacation in Yugoslavia - April

Once her part in Man of La Mancha in done, Sophia, pregnant, flies to Yugoslavia where she rests at Sveti Stefan, a luxury town-hotel considered the most exclusive resort on Montenegro's coast.

United Nations Medal - July 7

To celebrate its twentieth year in Italy the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization casts Sophia in the role of Ceres, the ancient Italian goddess of grain and cult-object for a commemorative coin which is sold to help finance worldwide farm development.

Ax-Wielding Attack - September 18
Ex railway worker named Sinibaldo Appolloni, described as mentally ill by police, breaks into the grounds of Villa Marino brandishing an ax and shouting three-year old Carlo was his son. Sophia is the villa at the time but the all doors are locked the keep the man out. Appolloni was known to the Pontis since he had showed up twice before at the villa with similar claims.

En Route to Geneva - September 15
Sophia flies to Geneva on a private plane and stays in a luxurious 14-room apartment on Charles-Bonnet Street, bought at the time Carlo, Jr. was born, waiting for the date she is to give birth to her second child. This house is still Sophia's main resident today.
