![]() A Countess from Hong Kong Premiere - January 5 Sophia
announces in December 1966 that she will not be present at the premiere
of her latest film because she is pregnant but also because she does
not wish to risk running into her co-star Marlon Brando. They did not
get along on the picture and rumor has it that when Brando was ill he
said to a friend he was afraid "if I die, Sophia will show up at my
funeral and get into all the photographs".
Another Miscarriage - January 7 Sophia,
pregnant, is rushed from her villa to the Paideia clinic in Rome on
January 7 after suffering acute pain and haemorrhage. Surgery
is performed by Dr. Pietro Marziale and a team of emergency personnel.
Sophia has lost her baby
again. She completes the soundtracks of C'era una volta
in Rome and flies on February1st to Switzerland where she spends, at
her
Bürgenstock chalet, the entire month resting and fighting
depression.
Sophia Wins Case against her Father - February 2 Sophia
wins the suit filed by her father in December 1966 for having said to
Italian and German magazines that her father had proved incapable of
supporting his family. Milan judge G. Amati dismisses the defamation
suit by Riccardo Scicolone on grounds all his daughter did was mention
facts already "widely known to the general public".
Sophia to Adopt a Child - March 1 Italian weekly magazine Stop announces that it is rumored that Sophia may be planning to adopt or raise 18-month old Ernesto Carpasso whose parents were killed in a highway accident in Australia. Sophia denies the story right away. Oscar Stolen - March 12 Upon her return from Bürgenstock Sophia realizes her Oscar statuette along with other mementos from her film career have been stolen at the Villa during her absence. Sophia's Saviour - March Sophia starts consulting Dr. Hubert de Watteville in Geneva in order to know what is wrong with her since she has never been able to have a baby. Elisabetta Mussolini - April Sophia attends the christening of her niece, Elisabetta, daughter of her sister Maria and Romano Mussolini who was born on February 4. Proxy Marriage Ruled Invalid - April 27 Roman appeal court quashes bigamy proceedings against Sophia and Carlo after recognizing that their 1957 proxy marriage in Mexico was invalid. Since Italy now recognizes divorces obtained in other countries no bigamy charges are files in connection with their marriage in France in 1966. Pope's Invitation Turned Down - May 5 Sophia and Carlo do not attend a private audience with Pope Paul VI. Other press and entertainment guests who also received an invitation were Gina Lollobrigida and Claudia Cardinale who do show up. Ponti-Loren vs. Gente Sophia and Carlo sue Italian Gente weekly magazine after it publishes a forged exclusive interview entitled "I have lost my baby". |
