![]() Musée Grévin - January 28 Sophia is in Paris to unveil her life-size wax figure at Musée Grévin. Academy Awards - April 5 Sophia attends the Oscar Ceremony at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium where she accepts on Peter Ustinov's behalf his award for supporting role in Topkapi. Maiden Journey on the SS Michelangelo - May 12 Sophia and Carlo are among the 1,800 passengers to board the SS Michelangelo on its maiden trip to New York City. Scheduled to board in Naples they change their plans at the last minute and Sophia is replaced by new Italian movie star Virna Lisi. Operation Crossbow Premiere - May 19 Sophia and Carlo arrive in London from New York City on May 19 in order to attend the premiere of Operation Crossbow at the Empire on Leicester Square. Sisters of Nazareth - June While filming Arabesque in London Sophia visits the Sisters of Nazareth at the Nazareth House in Isleworth after being invited by two nuns who saw her filming a location scene in the neighborhood. Trip to Moscow - July 18-21 Sophia and Carlo fly to Moscow to attend the fourth Moscow Film Festival where Matrimonio all'italiana is presented at the Palace of the Congresses in the Kremlin. The trip includes a reception at the Italian embassy and the visit of several Russian attractions, including the the Red Square, the Church of St. Nicholas in Khamovniki, the Novodevichy Convent and Cemetery and the Kremlin. She wins the Best Actress award at closing ceremonies on July 20. Artist-photographer Valerii Gende-Rote follows Sophia during all her stay in Moscow and his remarkable prints are a celebration to the beauty of the 30-year old Loren. Sophia is at the Savoy Hotel in London with Charlie Chaplin to announce the making of their new movie, A Countess from Hong Kong. Sophia is quoted as saying, "And I'm scared to death - like a schoolgirl on her first day at school - about the idea of working with Mr. Chaplin. After all, he practically invented this business." A Star from Ustinov - November 25 Sophia receives at the premiere of Lady L in London the Alexander Korda Star from Peter Ustinov after being named The International Star of the Year by the British Film Academy. Dr. Zhivago Premiere - December 22 After flying to New York on the 20th, Sophia and Carlo attend the premiere of Doctor Zhivago, produced by the latter, at the Capitol Theater. Sophia, dressed in a white mink cape by Nico Terzis for Maximilian and a low-cut white dress by Dior, is actually the star of the evening even though she does not appear in the movie. ![]() Sophia's Films Banned in Arab Countries - January 16 The Arab Boycott office in Cairo is blacklisting Sophia in all Arab countries after she defied warnings against her participation in the film Judith, shot in Israel. They claim the film "misrepresented historical facts to serve international Zionism". Dinner in Vevey - January Sophia is invited by Charlie Chaplin to have dinner at his house, near Montreux, Switzerland, while some of the Lady L scenes are being filmed at the Montreux Palace. Newspapers soon announce that Sophia, following her encounter in Vevey with Chaplin, has accepted to play in A Countess from Hong Kong. The French Solution - January 21 Sophia

Villa Marino Sophia and Carlo finally move in their marvelous villa in Marino, south of Rome. "... a house is like a person", says Sophia, "you must be together for a while to be comfortable". Vatican The Best Actress Nominations Sophia is nominated for Best Actress Award for her performance in Matrimonio all'italiana at the Golden Globe (February 8) and the Academy Awards (April 5). Julie Andrews wins both awards for her role in Mary Poppins. From the Lady L Set - March 3 Sophia is under a doctor's order to remain in bed, while shooting Lady L in Nice, after she comes down with the influenza. While in Nice filming at Victorine Studio, Sophia is also doing the French dubbing of her new film Matrimonio all'italiana. Italian Court Orders Sophia and Carlo to Trial - April 21 Sophia and Carlo are ordered to stand trial in a Rome court on July 6 on bigamy charges. They had originally been charged in June 1962 but no date had been set. They are liable to prison charges of up to five years if convicted. Holidays in Jamaica - April 22 Sophia Loren and Carlo leave Rome en route to a holiday in Jamaica one day after they learn they are to stand trial in a Rome court later on during the year. They decline comment on the announcement. They visit writer Noel Coward at his famous house, Firefly. Queen Mother and Martin Luther King Jr. both visited Coward during 1965. Ponti's Wife Is Granted French Citizenship - July 4 Carlo Ponti's first wife, Giuliana Fiastri, becomes French citizen, which now allows Ponti to get legally divorced in France and remarry later. Italian Court Hearings - July 6 The court meets for only 15 minutes and sets October 21 for the next hearing. Both Carlo and Sophia are absent as Sophia is getting ready to go to the Moscow Film Festival after completion of the movie Arabesque. Autobiography - August Sophia is writing her autobiography which does not go into book form but is rather published in several instalments by several magazines throughout the world.
