Bambi Awards - April 23
Sophia flies to Frankfurt from where she goes to Karlsruhe, West Germany, to receive the Most Popular Foreign Actress Actress at the annual ceremony held at the Schwarzwaldhalle.

Cannes Film Festival - May
Sophia attends the famous French festival for the fourth time where La Ciociara is in competition. Security at the Festival has never been so big with about 1,000 policemen as Sophia arrives at the Festival. Her appearance at the screening of the movie on May 6, in a white Dior dress, satin rose in her hair and dazzling diamond necklace, makes a startling contrast to the dirty, ragged Sophia that the audience saw in the film. She is terrorized as she enters the Palais des Festivals while the crowd is pushing and shoving to get closer to the star. This year's edition also has Gina Lollobrigida on hand while new Italian star Claudia Cardinale, with two of her films presented, is the Festival's rising star. Sophia wins Best Actress award on May 18. Festival dates: May 3 through May 18.

Trip to New York - May
  Sophia and Carlo fly to New York on May 25 to celebrate the success of La Ciociara which premiered in the Big Apple on May 8.  She defends America's First Lady's hemline against her former designer Emilio Schuberth who said earlier her skirts are too short. "Mrs. Kennedy has marvelous legs", says Sophia. "Why not show them?" Sophia is also in town, staying at the Sherry-Netherland Hotel, to do the English dubbing for La Ciociara at the Titra Sound Studio.

Horse Race in Sienna - July 2
Sophia is among the crowd at famous Palio horse race held every year in Sienna.

David di Donatello - July 30
Sophia is on hand to receive her first David di Donatello award at the Teatro Greco in Taormina. for her role in La Ciociara. Charlton Heston, with whom Sophia will play in El Cid later on during the year, receives Best Foreign Actor award for Ben Hur.

Bullfighting in Aranjuez - September 5
While in Spain for the making of Madame Sans-Gêne Sophia takes a break and goes to another bullfight at the historical plaza bicentanaria in Aranjuez during the September celebrations called "festejos taurinos".

La Ciociara in Los Angeles - November 12
  Sophia and Carlo fly to Los Angeles and attend the Hollywood premiere of La Ciociara followed by a lavish party given by Joe Levine. They fly back to Rome on the 20th after a short stopover in New York City and Sophia returns to the set of Boccaccio '70 a few more days before flying to Paris for her new movie opposite Anthony Perkins..

A Night at the Lido - December 6
Looking very much like the temptress she plays in the movies, Sophia and her escort attend a gala for the opening of the new Paris show "Pour Vous" at the Lido club.

Sophia as Santa Claus - December 23
Santa Claus gets an assist from Sophia Loren in spreading the Christmas spirit during the distribution of Christmas packages to youngsters at the Adriano Theater in Rome.

Broken Shoulder in Madrid - January 27
Sophia falls on the stairs in her Madrid apartment as she is running to answer the phone, breaking her left shoulder blade. Attending doctors at the British-American hospital in Madrid say she will have to wear a cast for three or four weeks. She flies to Rome three days later where her doctor, Ugo Cardone, orders a two-week rest.

Rising star Claudia Cardinale is now Sophia's new Italian maggiorata as French and Italian newspapers expose their rivalry following her appearance at the Cannes Festival.

  Sophia flies with Carlo from Rome to Orly in order to shoot her first film in Paris. She stops at the salon of Guy Laroche, who designs her wardrobe for upcoming movie Five Miles to Midnight, hers to keep when the film is done.

Christian-Jacque Wedding - November 26
Sophia and Carlo attend in Paris the wedding celebration of Christian-Jacque who directed Sophia in Madame Sans-Gêne.

Mr. Blackwell' Worst Dressed
Sophia is ranked as second worst dressed woman on Blackwell's list published annually. "Sophia Loren, off the screen, is still the Italian shop girl she portrays in the movies. Someone should tell her that simplicity is not drabness."

Sophia Sues Bronston over El Cid - December 20
Sophia brings suit against her producer because she is not getting equal billing with co-star Charlton Heston on a giant 40 x15 outdoor sign at the Warner Theater in New York City where the film is presented.
