From Sofia to Sophia
Sophia is introduced by Ponti to Titanus producer Goffredo Lombardo. He hires her for the movie Africa under the Sea and while the film is being edited he gives her new name Sophia Loren, inspired by the name of Swedish actress Märta Torén who had starred in his latest movie Maddalena. Mario Natale

Carlo Ponti Ponti-De Laurentiis Cinematografica produces eight movies in 1952 including La tratta delle bianche featuring Sophia. Carlo sends Sophia to Rome's Experimental Center for Cinematographic Arts to learn more about movies, and finds her a speech tutor to cure her thick Neapolitan accent. |
